Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise at the age of just a young girl. The aunt was on during the night shift as nurse so she could follow her passion for theater and art during the day. She showed DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay saw how art was a powerful tool to promote the cause of activism. DuVernay grew up with an aunt who was socially aware and taught her how to make use of the arts as a means to express herself. DuVernay was a child living with family members in Compton was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer and was motivated to make a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation, she studied at the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay started producing for the broadcast industry while she was in her college. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the watch and search the home of an individual member of the Jury. DuVernay was dissatisfied with the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to switch over to the public relations industry. DuVernay was hired straight out of college as an assistant publicist in an unassuming studio. She was hired in 1999 and founded her own company that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. Alongside PR, the agency has also launched lifestyle networks as well as advertising campaigns such as the Urban Beauty Collective.
